Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 – is it being unfairly treated? (Picture: Activision)
The Monday letters page agrees Sony is concentrating too much on hardware and not software, as one reader enquires after Fashion Dreamer.

Nobody likes talking about Call Of Duty more than people who don’t play Call Of Duty, it’s amazing really. I don’t get it. People who don’t play it dragging it for the campaign length when it’s only one third of the package.
Even since Modern Warfare back in 2007 people have enjoyed the multiplayer element for far more hours than the campaign. That’s where the length and value for money is, and that works out as pence per hour not pounds.
Game sites are guilty too, reviewing just a single element as if it’s the entire offering.

Fiddly and slow and fun
I’m mostly enjoying Alan Wake 2. Unlike yourselves I quite enjoy the live action stuff. The musical number is pretty fantastic.
It has been for large chunks of my 12 hours so far, a fiddly and slow game but I don’t mind that.
Some have described it as a walking sim which is the sort of level, I’ve been enjoying it on. But I don’t say it as a criticism.
I will say though the combat deserves a special place in hell. It’s as you describe in your review. Slow, clumsy, and aggravating.
Control’s combat couldn’t of been more joyful and triumphant so not sure what happened there with Alan Wake 2.

GC: The musical number was our favourite bit! We think the combat was a victim of them making the game a full-on survival horror, where they were trying to make you feel more vulnerable by turning everyone into a complete klutz.
Pretty good
My thoughts on Alan Wake 2, as someone with experience on Alan Wake I found confusion at first. And frustration with the first boss battle, Nightingale, but only because I was stuck in the scenery as I was scavenging around for ammo.
After that, I began to like the game. Personally, I liked the combat. I think it’s a step up from the first game and I didn’t have an issue with it. And I liked the protagonist Saga as well and I don’t want to spoil what goes on later but suffice to say guiding Alan to take part in a musical is one of gaming’s most bizarre and brilliant moments.
But for me this was worth waiting many years for. I would give it an 8 out of 10. Only cons being overuse of the Mind Place and maps. Pros are its one of the best looking games I have ever seen.

Unable to disagree
I’m a video game enthusiast, I 100% agree that Sony is making a whole bunch of hardware and nothing else to back it up! I currently own 454 games on PlayStation and the only true two PlayStation 5 games are Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal, which actually could run on a PS4 Pro!
And I love Call Of Duty but Activision lied and have taken people’s hard earn money on trash DLC. The company said in an article that Modern Warfare 3 was going to be a two year game. I currently will not purchase Modern Warfare 3 because it is seriously DLC that they could have added to updates and seasons (straight up cash grab).
Sorry, I just wanted to vent and I totally agree with the need to make games that are finished and stop pushing this halfway rubbish out on the market.

Different Style
Just to ask if you will be reviewing Fashion Dreamer on the Switch, please?
I liked the Style Boutique games on DS and 3DS and was wondering how similar they are to the new Switch game?
I’m concerned for its quality as there was quite a lengthy trailer for it, which doesn’t bode well as it’s like the game/developers are wanting to show you everything from the start, hoping to overwhelm us so we buy it.
Anxiously waiting.

GC: It’s not something we feel we could express an opinion on, but it is by the same developer.
Top of the pods
In reference to Ali K mentioning in the Inbox on Friday, that there aren’t many good UK based gaming podcasts, I’d highly recommend The Computer Game Show. Four relatable guys who all love gaming, discussing news and what they’ve been playing each week.
Sounds fairly basic but it’s very funny and because it’s British around 50% of the show is made up of the guys digging each other out and getting into arguments. I listen to Back Page pod and My Perfect Console, but nothing beats The Computer Game Show each week.

I unintentionally made a friend chuckle last night when he informed me that he was thoroughly enjoying the new RoboCop game. I mentioned that it wasn’t authentic enough because it didn’t have the ITV dub to edit out all the swear words. I had the fortune to see the full cut on its release but the censored TV version became the stuff of legend.
Does anyone remember the infamous ‘Why me?’ rant when the thief is robbing the liquor store?
Considering how little effort is put into normal TV now it’s amazing to see all that hard work put in to not offend the audience… in an intentionally offensive movie.
Lethal Weapon was another heavily edited movie. ‘I’m a cop, that’s a badge, and this is a real firing gun.’
Wonk
Too early
I don’t know if it was due to a lockdown release and poor availability or the lack of really amazing first party software, but the PlayStation 5 really doesn’t feel like it is ready for a Pro spec version. Spider-Man 2 has only just started to push thing’s graphically and to be quite frank Zelda looks beautiful and probably runs on something with less oomph than the phone I’m typing this on.
Why is that relevant? As consoles push up the power, it takes more hours and commitment to extract the very best and the triple-A games which are costing nearly as much, if not more than, movies will take longer to develop and be perhaps even more generic to ensure success.
I think it’s quite interesting that I love games, and graphics and sound make a massive difference, but pretend reality still looks like pretend reality and I personally prefer a manga or cartoon style.
I think processing power for how characters interact or in driving games in terms of competitors is perhaps a relevance now, but more power… just not sure we’ve even scratched the surface of the current generation.

First time non-buyer
Nice to know the Call Of Duty file size at the start is 200GB, because not 1MB will find its way onto my PlayStation even though they have always said that the game isn’t DLC the trophiess proves that it was. They couldn’t even be bothered to split the games up.
I’m not buying Modern Warfare 3, I’m not paying £70 for DLC, so for the first time since the first ever Call Of Duty came out I’m not getting it and after their cheap, rip-off misleading info I don’t think I’ll ever buy another Call Of Duty again.

Chasing the unicorn
As an ex-PC gamer, one thing I’ve realised and what led me away from PC gaming, is that there’s never hardware powerful enough for developers.
I got to a point where I was regularly buying a newer, usually top of range GPU, but then the next game came out and it wasn’t enough again, and I got fed up of chasing the unicorn.
Visuals are at a very high level now and developers need to plan better for the hardware they are working on and optimise to hit their target frame rates.
Ray-tracing was hyped on these consoles, but their ray-tracing capabilities are very limited as AMD were light years behind with ray-tracing at time. Their use is minimal and less refined than in the PC space and rarely justified over the cheaper alternative effects, and definitely not when at expense of target frame rates. Developers should lose some fancy effects if necessary to keep their frame rates stable.
I’m not against the idea that there’s a Pro set of consoles, although I think their benefits will be less obvious than ever before, personally, but I’m against developers getting away with making games with shoddy frame rates, and we are all just expected to buy new hardware to fix it. Games for consoles should be made with the limitations of the hardware in mind and a stable frame rate is more important than some fancy effects.
I’m lucky that my TV has VRR and supports 40Hz modes, and personally think this is a better option than a PS5 Pro.

There’s been plenty of new Resident Evil games since the Darkside Chronicles came out. Is there even the slightest chance there will be any more on-rail Resi shooters? I want more.

GC: There’s always a chance, but we wouldn’t bet on it.
I’m going to predict it now: Silent Hill 2 remake will be really band and it won’t sell. This whole revival has not been thought out properly.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Danse, who asks what franchise or genre have you changed your opinion on over time?
Not every game or concept can grab you straight away, but are there any that grew on you over time? Similarly, is there any that you used to enjoy but have now grown tired of?
What caused the change and did it happen suddenly, with just one game or experience, or gradually over the time, following multiple sequels and similar games? Is there anything in the future that you think could change your mind again?
