Assassin’s Creed Mirage – will it be discounted? (Picture: Ubisoft)
The Friday letters page thinks Warner Bros. should make Suicide Squad a tax write-off, as a couple of readers lose faith in Sega.

Shopping list
So Black Friday is coming up and like many I’m hoping to make some good savings. I don’t need any of the consoles, but it looks like all three are going to be cheap, with some good bundles, so I’m happy for anyone that’s going to benefit from that.
The only game that’s showed up in multiple lists so far is EA Sports FC 24, so presumably that’s going to be one of the favourites to be discounted, but you can usually guess what the others will be, based on what’s come out lately and didn’t seem to do great.
I think that’s definitely going to include Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which was already on Sony’s list, and definitely Sonic Superstars which seems to have done badly, alongside Lords Of The Fallen. I’m kinda of hoping for RoboCop: Rogue City too, but its unexpectedly good reviews may save it, as I think it actually did okay in terms of sales.
Older games like Resident Evil 4, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Diablo 4, and Street Fighter 6 are bound to be cheaper too. One benefit of a good year for games means lots of really good bargains! Not sure about Hogwarts Legacy though, as that still seems to be selling.
The big questions for me are Starfield and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. To be honest, I’m not even sure if Microsoft make enough Xbox discs for them to be available for a discount, but if there are enough it could end up surprisingly cheap. Modern Warfare 3, though? I think it’ll be at least £10 to £20 off. In fact, how cheap it is on Black Friday may be the best indication of how well it’s sold so far!

Cold turkey
I really hope we see the Elden Ring DLC at The Game Awards next month. Geoff Keighley got to premiere the original game’s trailer so I think there’s a pretty good chance. I feel like I’m starting to get withdraw symptoms from FromSoftware games.
Lies Of P and Lords Of The Fallen have not scratched the itch and while Remnant was very good it’s actually different enough that I’m not even sure I’d call it a Soulslike. That’s good for it, but not for me that wants to get back to an actual From game.
Even though I’m not a sci-fi fan I may give Armored Core 6 a go, just so I don’t get the shakes but my understanding is it doesn’t have the exploration of a Soulslike, only similar combat. If I can pick it up during Black Friday though I’ll give it a go.

Switching sides
Being a gamer of 40, I have always stayed loyal to Sega. Back in those days you picked Sonic or Mario and it was a life decision you didn’t take lightly.
I class myself as a gamer, so I play all consoles but never really got on with Mario due to my allegiance with Sonic.
I have played pretty much all Mario games and appreciate them for what they are, but never been one to say they are the best.
Played Super Mario Bros. Wonder and wow! What a game this is.
I really cannot believe the magic and love this game oozes at every opportunity.
Very impressed and it’s a game I might even try to 100%.

Broken promises
It seems like I’ve been listening to Sega pretend they’re going to revive classic games for decades now. It’s like me saying I’ll fix the wall in the garden, I’m always going to get round to it but never even really start. We have all these rumours of super games and Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio revivals (why is it always those ones?) and other stuff but nothing ever happens, and I find it hard to imagine anything ever will.
Clearly no one at Sega has any faith in these old games, or probably even understands their appeal. I mean, Crazy Taxi was shallow as hell when it was a Dreamcast game, how is it going to feel nowadays? More importantly, I don’t think they have the money to turn any of these into modern games, and they’re not quite stupid enough to try.
Worst of all this first super game just sounds like more live service nonsense. So clearly they’ve learned their lessons from Hyenas. By which I mean, of course, they’ve learned nothing.

No data
Having enjoyed Alan Wake 2 and been pleased to see it get some very good scores in reviews (I understand the complaints but for me they are all easily dismissed) I’m worried about how much it’s sold. I have heard nothing about sales and because it’s digital only – which I always thought was a mistake – it doesn’t appear in any chart from around the world.
Is there any indication of how it sold because I really want there to be another one. If there’s not I just hope they wrap things up well enough in the DLC to count as an ending, although given the whole connected universe thing (another mistake, in my opinion) I don’t know how likely that is.

GC: There’s almost no way of knowing unless Remedy or publisher Epic Games make an announcement, although the fact that they haven’t tells its own story. The only sliver of information is that it didn’t appear in the top 150 list of most played US console games, up to October 28. It only had a single day to make an impact, but hopefully the same chart next month will reveal more.
Write it off
So, basically, Warner Bros. have given up being a proper games publishers and are just going to be a live service game company? Well, I bet that doesn’t blow up in their face and turn out to be a massive failure. Nope, no chance of that at all.
I mean, they’ve got the evidence of Spider-Man 2 right there, a game that completely rips off Batman: Arkham at every turn, and we’re almost a decade away from the last proper Batman game. How can that even happen? People joke about a Microsoft mole being in charge of Sony’s marketing, I think someone from Marvel must work at Warner Bros.
I was quite looking forward to finding out more about the Wonder Woman game, since they said it was single-player and it was by the Shadow Of Mordor team, and now we find out its more live service garbage. Or, worse, it originally wasn’t and just had it shoved in at the last moment.
I couldn’t be less interesting now but I’m negative interested in Suicide Squad, which continues to look absolutely dreadful on every level. Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t Warner Bros. the ones that were cancelling films like Batgirl as a tax right-off? I don’t know how that works but it seems to me that doing the same thing to the Suicide Squad is the best thing that could ever happen to that game.

GC: That is what they did with Batgirl, yes. And another one just this month, actually, a Looney Tunes spin-off starring John Cena.
Phoenix from the flames
Tell you what, I still think Starfield has got a chance of smelling like roses. No Man’s Sky got low marks but after a few years with updates and extra content its meant to be really good.
My mate plays it and he says it’s great now, just that Xbox has gotta carry on pumping money into it to get it to the game every was hoping. The problem is, this is Xbox and they don’t like doing that nowadays.
David
GC: Don’t like doing what? Anyway, it’s more than possible fan mods that will redeem Starfield, once they get official support.

A sad month
It’s been a very awful few weeks lately, first of all losing my wife’s father, then only four days later sadly my dad passed away; he was only 67, bless him.
It was all very sudden with my dad, and I honestly thought we had more years with him. At least he’s at peace now and he was so very proud of me.
My father-in-law was 87, so not a bad age.
Reading your stories and everyone’s letters is definitely helping, so thank you GameCentral and everyone who writes in.
Could I ask please if you and/or any readers have got a game in mind I could play please, fancy a change and don’t mind what I play? I have a PlayStation 5 and a Xbox with Game Pass Ultimate.
Normally play Gran Turismo, Modern Warfare 2 and others, but too much to list.
Keep up the good work GameCentral love reading your pages every morning and find your reviews are so honest that they’re what makes me decide whether or not to get a game I’ve had my eyes on.
Kind regards and thank you,

GC: We’re very sorry for your loss. And we’re humbled if reading the site helps in any way. If you had a Switch, we would’ve suggested something cheerful like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but perhaps the likes of Sackboy: A Big Adventure or Ratchet & Clank on PlayStation 5? Or maybe a cosy game like Stardew Valley or the Pokémon-esque Cassette Beasts, which are both on Game Pass.

I can see how working at Nintendo must seems like you’ve got into Cambridge or Oxford and you’d constantly feel like you didn’t belong there (I do not speak from experience). I bet they have a nice canteen though.

This week’s Hot Topic
The PlayStation 5 turned three years old on Sunday, and the Xbox Series X/S two days before that, so for this weekend’s Inbox we want to know how you think they’re both doing.
Do you own either console and if so, what do you think of them in terms of the hardware and the current software line-up? If you don’t own either console, why is that and what would convince you to get them?
What are your hopes and expectations for the future, for both formats, and do you think this console generation has so far been better or worse than the previous one?
