GTA 6 – the first trailer is out now (Picture: Rockstar Games)
The Tuesday letters page is more worried than usual about the digital-only future, as one reader hopes a new Paper Mario game is on the way.

Welcome surprise
So imagine my surprise when I saw the GTA 6 trailer pop up out of nowhere on Monday night. I didn’t see any sign of leaks but whatever the reason, that trailer is incredible. I mean, I’m not a massive GTA fan by a long shot but those graphics are out of this world. A massive improvement on Red Dead Redemption 2 and I’d say that’s still the best-looking game I’ve ever played – even compared to current gen only games.
Rockstar has had all the time in the world to prepare for this, but you’d have to say they’ve still managed to exceed expectations. Some of those crowd scenes, like at the beach with dozens of realistic people, seem almost impossible. And the more detailed ones of the two main characters, they look like high-end pre-rendered CGI from just a couple of years ago.
I’m not necessarily expecting anything new in terms of gameplay – there’s definitely nothing in the trailer we haven’t seen before – but assuming the final game really does look like that this is an absolute triumph and we’ve only seen 90 seconds of it.

Return of the king
No more needs to be said. It’s real. It’s coning in 2025. It looks phenomenally mystifying and we’ve made it, after 10 years.
I’ll say the trailer definitely matched our high expectations. It looks gorgeous, as does Miami in real life. I absolutely can say that I’ll gladly pay £70 for this, because it is what Rockstar stands for. That quality over quantity. Take notes Ubisoft. Take notes Bethesda. We are strapped in for 2025.

A different league
I hate to be that guy but compare the graphics in GTA 6 to Starfield and it looks like there’s at least two generations between them. The facial animation in GTA 6 is staggeringly good. I don’t even know what Bethesda’s excuse is, given they’ve got the same amount as money as Rockstar, thanks to Microsoft, and just as much experience with open world games.
It’s not just them though, everyone is now so far behind Rockstar in terms of graphics it’s just a case of them vs. the world. I pity whatever other open world game is going to come out next year because it’s going to look like a fossil compared to GTA 6.
That doesn’t mean it’ll play well, but I’ll be honest I’ll pay good money just to experience a game that looks that good, no matter how it plays. Which has always been the case for GTA really.

Digital destiny
This digital content removal on PlayStation is just disgusting. I know it’s not Sony’s fault exactly but the fact that it can even happen should be illegal. I’ve paid the same amount for a game or a video as if I bout it on disc so why should my rights to what I can do with it be any different?
There really should be rules put in place to ensure that this is impossible to ever happen with a game, before it inevitably does happen with something.
The digital-only future is inevitable now but unless we lay down some ground rules for it right now things are only going to get worse the more time goes by.

Peachy keen
I’m kind of sad we never got Walpeach. I ironically like Peach as a character because she’s so ridiculous old-fashioned in concept and yet when she’s written well, like the Paper Mario games, she’s really funny and her cliched look can be used for some good laughs.
I really hope Super Mario RPG and The Thousand-Year Door remaster means that a new Paper Mario, that is actually a role-player, is coming. Those games are still the funniest and best written things Nintendo has ever done and it’s a real shame they keep undermining them.
As far as I understand Super Mario RPG has sold very well in Japan, so hopefully that’s a sign that more will be in the way.

Reading time
I have to admit that Fallout TV trailer did really look good. The problem is it looks too good. It looks like what the games were always trying to be but never managed and I don’t know whether that’s embarrassing for Bethesda or not. Probably not, It just goes to show how much better TV and film are at making a story feel funny and dynamic, compared to a game.
Like GC said, the story was always the worst part of the Fallout games so I’ll be interested to see if this can be a positive influence. The question is whether the show will have a bit where there are some skeletons lying around and you read someone’s diary that explains what happens. I’m guessing not, because that’s not very cinematic, but it’s so Fallout.
Now I think of it, I can’t think of any show or movie using that concept and yet it happens all the time in games. For some reason video game characters are really keen diarists and can’t stop writing even when they’re being eaten by monsters or the world is ending. I guess it’s good to have a hobby.

Payne-ful wait
I want to echo Simon’s Inbox post about Max Payne 3, I’m on my third playthrough over the years and it’s still fantastic. One note, yes, but when the note is that good it’s easy to get swept along, and it’s worth playing just for the joyful physics of launching Max down a football stadium stand and crunching into walls.
As we wait on the GTA 6 trailer I live in hope that Rockstar incorporates the Payne shooting mechanics into the new title.

Change of plan
Looking forward to seeing the GTA 6 trailer later today. Ordinarily you’d expect to be disappointed after all this build up but I’m expecting that the graphics will be very good and that will help excuse if the game looks like the same old thing. And given how slow this generation has been to get going I’m kind of okay with that.
I do agree that Vice City is not an inspiring setting though, if it’s not going to be the 80s. We all know that Rockstar isn’t going to do a GTA set in another country but they could at least do somewhere else in the US. We’ve never seen the GTA universe equivalent of Seattle or Boston and a bunch of other famous cities.
We’ve also never really had anywhere that rural. The difference between rural people and city dwellers is behind most of the social strife in American (and elsewhere) but that’s never really been addressed. Starting off as a farmer who’s sucked into a life of crime in the big city sounds like a pretty good career path to me.
We’re clearly not going to get that or anything other than Bonnie and Clyde by way of Quentin Taratino. But that’s fine, as long as it looks good.

RE: GTA 6. I’ve waited all these years for the sequel and the trailer doesn’t even show any of the actual table tennis gameplay.
Bll
Just watched the GTA 6 trailer and gotta be honest, looks fantastic. Top graphics, looks massive. Only one problem I can see it’s end of 2023, they’re going to makes us wait around 18 months to get our chubby little fingers on it.

This week’s Hot Topic
By Tuesday afternoon the first GTA 6 teaser should be released – an initial look at the first new Grand Theft Auto game in over a decade. So, for this weekend’s Inbox we ask the obvious question: what did you think of it?
Was the trailer what you expected, and did it meet, exceed, or undershoot your expectations? How excited are you about the game now and what are you hopes and expectations for its features, story, gameplay, and open world? Do you think it will be as big or bigger than GTA 5 and do you intend to get it day one?
Do feel free to comment on the game in the weekday Inbox as well – perhaps leave your more considered thoughts for the Hot Topic, after you’ve had a couple of days to think things over – but either way please clearly indicate whether a letter is intended for the normal Inbox or the Hot Topic.
