How long will we have to wait? (Picture: Sony)
The Monday letters page thinks Microsoft is still capable of reaching its goal with Xbox, as one reader imagines a better Ghostbusters game.

Glass half full
We’re only a few days into 2024 and already we’ve had a new trailer from Sony and what amounts to announcements about Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid Delta. I’m hearing rumours about an Xbox Direct this month and Nintendo are always pretty regular with their Directs. The big question though is when is the first State of Play going to be?
I’m going to be optimistic and say that the trailer is an indication that Sony is going to be a lot more up front this year and that we’re going to get some big announcements early on and an end to them being so secretive.
The first State of Play last year was on February 23 and I’m going to predict that this year’s will be at least that soon. The only problem is the new PlayStation boss, who may want to leave any big reveals until after they start in April, which could be a downer.
The worst case scenario is that we have to wait several months until after they start for any news and this ends up just being like last year, but hopefully that won’t be what’s happening and we’ll soon have a lot more to look forward to.

Some disappointment
Gamers are spoilt with games and Sony is paying the price. I’ve seen a lot of Reader’s Features and articles about how Sony needs to up their game and that they’re being lazy. But the fact is, all the new games take much longer to make and are more expensive. People think Sony’s being lazy because Xbox and Nintendo are making games all the time – but none of Xbox’s games really make much of an impact.
For example, Starfield was hyped up for years but when it finally released it was a glitchy mess and quite boring to be honest. And Nintendo, their console is much less technically demanding to make games for. And while I’ll admit, that doesn’t make their games any less good, the point is that everyone expects multiple Spider-Man 2s every year now, when that’s impossible.
I have to agree, it’s disappointing that they’re not releasing as many games anymore, but they’re sacrificing quality over quantity. The only problem is that right now, too much time is being spent on remasters. The Last Of Us Part 2 does not need a remaster. There’s practically no visual difference and the only new features are No Return and adaptive triggers.

Contrasting achievements
It is now 2024 and a young 13-year-old boy is the only known person to ever beat the game Tetris.
However, Sky News reported on his phenomenal triumph and the Sky News presenter, Jayne Secker, responded with the exact words… ‘I’m a mother go outside and get some fresh air, beating Tetris is not a goal.’
(The 13-year-old boy played and beat Tetris in respect to losing his own father only very recently.)
And yet on the other hand we have Luke Littler the 16 year sensational dart player only the other day missing out on a World Final match. However, Sky Sports have nothing but praise for this lad staying in practicing his darts and they probably don’t know it anyway, but he also plays on his Xbox too.
To me It’s just like calling the kettle black.

The franchise rights alone
I was playing new Ghostbusters VR game at a mate’s house recently and it was… okay. Like everything else Ghostbusters related it seems to completely miss the point of the original film, as it’s neither funny or scary, but I guess that’s par for the course.
By coincidence the next game I played was Jurassic World Evolution 2 and it made me think, why don’t we have this game but for Ghostbusters? The original movie was all about setting up a new business in Regan’s America and a lot of the jokes come from that, which could easily be worked into a business style strategy game.
I have heard people suggest this before, but why hasn’t it happened yet? Nobody wanted to be Venkman the action hero, they wanted to be Venkman the wise arse and that’s much easier to get across in a non-action game. I bet it never happens but I am surprised there’s not an unofficial indie equivalent.

All that matters
I love my Xbox, prefer the controller, Live, Achievements, but understand why others prefer Sony. Both have dropped the ball at times, but my worry is more for the gaming studios and cost of making games.
Without the games, a console is just a lump of expensive plastic and I worry many will go bust. Also, looking at 2024, it’s not exactly bursting at the seams with new game releases, that we know of. And that’s at a time when multiplayer seems to be on the decrease as an add-on for a game.
I would argue, with so few games, multiplayer has never been more important as a way for gamers to get their gaming fix. All the best to GC for 2024.

Missing home
I really hope the Elden Ring DLC does come out this year as I loved that game and I feel almost… homesick at having run out of excuses to return there. I know the game’s not exactly underrated but for me Elden Ring has been the best game of the current and last generation and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not surpassed until the next generation.
Like many fans my hope is for that empty areas of the map to be ‘filled in’ with new lands, although I do wonder that this seems a bit too obvious and may not be what is intended. Making an entire light/dark world version of the map is the other suggestion I’ve heard, which sounds like an impossible amount of work but then so did the original game!
I’m not expecting any clear explanations of anything but I would like to see something on what exactly The Lands Between are? Is it between life and death? Dreams and reality? Or just different dimensions? And why does it seem to be made up of different chunks of other worlds? I don’t remember any descriptions discussing this aspect of the lore, unless a reader can correct me?

Unhappy ending
I finally finished Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom over the Christmas break and it was easily going to be my game of the year but that whole end section killed it for me. Spoilers so guessing you will edit it out [redacted – GC] it just went against the rest of the game, which was just pure freedom.
It just felt like a load of padding when it just wasn’t needed. The game was an absolute classic and then I hit those last bits, and I was raising my eyes and huffing at the whole thing.
I still loved the game, but it left a sour taste.

So which is better then? Xbox or PlayStation? McDonald’s or Burger King? Surely, it’s a matter of taste. Anyhow, I think if you look at the whole Xbox history, I think what Microsoft are doing, and will do, is pretty clear to see. Remember that Xbox documentary that came out (I thought it was really good), Microsoft’s intention at the beginning was to stop Sony dominating the living room, in lead up to the PlayStation 2.
A bunch of enthusiastic gamer employees took it upon themselves to create a rival machine using Microsoft’s DirectX technology. They went through hell and high water to get that original Xbox out, with Bill Gates becoming very angry at them at times. It was the people who love games at Microsoft who made it possible, and I believe that is still the case, but I think Microsoft are getting tired of the hardware side. Hence why they are buying everything up.
Their goal was always to stop Sony dominating the market, so having Game Pass on TVs and PlayStation and Nintendo would be a result for them from a business standpoint. No need for hardware but still a name to reckoned with in gaming and entertainment industry, if every time you boot up said products you see some sort of Microsoft products.
They got what they set out to do. Personally, I hope Xbox do still have those wild cards on staff and they continue to fight for games and gaming, no matter how much it costs their rich dad Microsoft.

GC: It’s a great game.
My daughter was playing Lego Fortnite all Christmas and I have to say I’m very impressed by how they’ve done it. No wonder it’s been a big success.

This week’s Hot Topic
Since this is the first Hot Topic of the new year the subject is obvious: what new games are you most looking forward to in 2024?
We’ve already put together a list of expected games here, but feel free to suggest anything that has a good chance of being released this year – just don’t make up titles that are unlikely or which are known to be out next year or later.
What are your expectations for the year in general and what new hardware do you expect to be launched – and do you intend to buy it?
