Friedrick Merz’s CDU will be preparing to form a coalition government after the party won 28.6% of the vote. He has already ruled out working with the far-right party AfD – despite them coming in second place with 20.8% of the vote.
He is likely to form a coalition with the outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD.
