Fraud up by a third in a year with £2.3bn lost during Covid-19 pandemic thanks to ‘scam industry boom’
The i says online fraudsters exploiting the pandemic have led to a “devastating surge” in scams with victims conned out of £2.3bn in the space of a year.
Consumer watchdog Which? found 413,553 instances of fraud were reported in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between March 2020 and April 2021, an increase of 33 per cent on the previous 12 months, where there had been a rise of just 8 per cent.
Top of the list were online shopping scams with criminals taking advantage of locked-down consumers buying more than ever before on the internet.
