Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz has revealed a reboot of the beloved sitcom could be in the works, with his co-star Bryan Cranston leading the charge on the script.

For anyone who grew up as a kid in the early 00s, this show centred on the dysfunctional family – with Frankie’s fourth-wall-breaking Malcolm slap bang in the middle of it – was a must-watch.

For six years and seven seasons, fans became absorbed by the chaotic home life depicted on screen… with characters including the lead’s hot-headed mother Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and lovable father Hal (Bryan), as well as brothers Francis (Christopher Kennedy Masterson), Reese (Justin Berfield) and Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan), becoming fan favourites.

Now 16 years after the comedy came to an end, Frankie has addressed its possible future return, saying that he’d ‘love to know what the family’s up to’ all this time later.

Speaking to Fox News, he said: ‘I know Bryan Cranston is really into the idea and he’s kind of heading writing the script and getting everything rolling. So, there might be something. I would be down 100%.’

    The 36-year-old added: ‘But I don’t know – we’ll see what happens.’

When Malcolm in the Middle was on the air, Frankie didn’t watch at the time, considering he was a kid during filming.

‘We did seven seasons, 151 episodes. I didn’t really watch the show when it was on, but I’ve now since watched the show with my wife,’ he explained, referring to his wife Paige Price, who he married in February 2020 and with whom he shares a son.

‘We [watched] all 151 episodes… I realised, “Wow, that’s what we were making.”… I can separate myself from being on it and watching it as a fan.’

Two years after Malcolm in the Middle came to an end, Bryan made his debut as Walter White in crime drama Breaking Bad, earning critical acclaim and several awards for his performance.

He directed seven episodes of the comedy sitcom, as well as three episodes of Breaking Bad, two episodes of Modern Family and an infamous episode of the US version of The Office called Work Bus.

Last year, Frankie spoke out about how Bryan calls him every couple of weeks to check in on him, proving their off-screen friendship is still going strong.

‘Bryan reaches out to me every two weeks and he has for 15 years. Like literally reaches out, “Just checking on you, hope you’re well, what are you up to?” He’s literally a Hollywood god and he calls me. He’s the best,’ he told Steve-O’s Wild Ride! podcast at the time.

Malcolm in the Middle is available to watch on Disney Plus.
