Frank Lampard announced as new Coventry manager to replace Mark Robins

Championship club Coventry City have announced Chelsea legend Frank Lampard as the club’s new head coach to replace Mark Robins.

It is Lampard’s first job since his second stint in charge of Chelsea on a caretaker basis in-between Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino.

Lampard’s arrival at Coventry – after the Sky Blues controversially decided to part ways with Robins – marks his fourth permanent managerial role following previous spells in charge of Derby County and Everton.

The former Premier League and England midfielder enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career and is regarded as one of the best players of his generation.

Lampard first entered management in 2018, taking charge of Derby and leading them to the Championship play-off final just a year later after a sixth-placed finish.

His beloved Chelsea then took a punt on him – but it ultimately did not work out – with Lampard’s next job seeing him tasked with keeping struggling Everton in the Premier League.

Lampard secured safety for Everton but the Toffees later dismissed him after a series of poor results in the 2022-23 season.

The 46-year-old has now accepted his first permanent role since that sacking, becoming manager of Coventry in English football’s second tier.

‘I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach,’ Coventry City owner Doug King said in a statement.

‘Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this league to be successful.

‘His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach.’

Coventry, who reached the FA Cup semi-finals last season, are 17th in the Championship table after their opening 17 games of the season and next face Cardiff City at home on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Lampard’s Coventry are set for a Boxing Day showdown against Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle next month.
