France 6-2 Panama: France top Group F and advances to last-16
France faced already-eliminated Panama in their final game of Group F at the 2023 Women’s World Cup – a match that was a nine-goal thriller.
World Cup debutants Panama opened the goalscoring through a superb free-kick courtesy of Marta Cox.
But France took control in Sydney, with Kadi Diani scoring a hat-trick, including two penalties.
France also scored through Lea le Garrec, Vicki Becho and an own goal, while Yomira Pinzon and Lineth Cedeno netted Panama’s consolation goals.
France will face the runners-up in Group H – possibly Germany – in the last 16, while Panama have suffered defeat in all three games at their first World Cup.
‘Offensive prowess’
France’s offensive prowess was on full display, and they opened up Panama’s defence with ease. Vicki Becho provided a perfectly placed cutback for Kadi Diani, whose quick reaction and skilful backheel attempt almost resulted in a goal. Though denied initially, Diani managed to scoop the rebound over the covering defender Wendy Natis and into the net via the crossbar.
With their momentum building, France extended their lead further. A handball by Pinzon in the box gifted Diani the opportunity to convert a penalty, adding another goal to her tally. Just before half-time, Le Garrec’s deep cross found the top corner, leaving Panama and goalkeeper Yenith Bailey helpless.
Stand-in captain Diani, who had recently recovered from collarbone surgery, proved her worth as she completed her hat-trick with another expertly taken penalty after Natis’ handball. Manager Herve Renard’s decision to rest captain Wendie Renard and top scorer Eugenie le Sommer paid off, showcasing France’s remarkable squad depth.
The young talent in the team also shined, with 19-year-old Becho stepping up to replace Le Sommer and scoring her first senior international goal in stoppage time.
France World Cup campaign
It’s not been the smoothest ride out of the group stages for Les Bleues, who faced a tough challenge from Jamaica in their opener and needed a late winner against Brazil.
Despite a few setbacks, France is now ready to make a statement in the knockout stages. With their offensive firepower and squad depth, they pose a real threat to any opponent they face.
