Metro – Former president shot at rally
Metro’s two front-page editions feature both of today’s major stories. The first is the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The front page features an image of Trump – bloodied after the bullet hit his ear – with his fist in the air looking defiant – with the US flag behind him. The lead story is on the 20-year-old shooter who was reportedly a registered Republican. He was shot dead by Secret Services – one person in the crowd was killed, and two others seriously injured.
Another Metro front page is dedicated to England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The paper says “Lions weep tonight” calling it “heartbreak” in the final.
England suffer Euro 2024 final heartbreak with late defeat to Spain
Spain are European champions again after England were beaten 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.
The Three Lions huffed and puffed during the opening period and did well to limit the threat of the pre-match favourites.
England looked to have been handed a huge psychological advantage at the start of the second period when Spain’s midfield maestro Rodri failed to emerge and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi.
That boost was quickly forgotten, however, with Spain taking the lead just 70 seconds after the re-start through a Nico Williams goal, created by the drive and thrust of 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.
Donald Trump says ‘I’m supposed to be dead’ in first interview since shooting
This is the moment Donald Trump thrust his fist in the air – just like after the assassination attempt – as he got off a plane in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention.
The former US president was centimetres away from being killed when a gunman, now identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot at him during a campaign rally.
Trump looked defiant on the stairs of his jet, and he was cheered on by supporters at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, before getting into his motorcade and travelling to his hotel.
The politician gave his first interview after the attack at a Pennsylvania rally, which left him with a blooded ear, insisting ‘I’m supposed to be dead’.
