FIA: Liam Lawson ‘not at fault’ for Mexico GP marshal incident

FIA Exonerates Liam Lawson in Mexico GP Marshal Incident

The FIA has officially cleared Liam Lawson of any responsibility following a near-miss with marshals during the Mexican Grand Prix. The incident, which raised serious safety concerns, saw the New Zealand driver narrowly avoid colliding with two officials on the track at Turn 1.

    FIA Statement on Lawson’s Actions

The FIA’s investigation concluded that Lawson had reacted appropriately to the double yellow flags displayed at the time. “Having analysed the telemetry from the incident, we can confirm that the driver of Car #30, Liam Lawson, slowed appropriately and reacted correctly,” the governing body stated. They highlighted that he braked earlier than on previous laps and was travelling significantly slower than racing speed.

    Incident Context

During the race, marshals unexpectedly entered the circuit to collect debris despite the FIA race director retracting an earlier instruction permitting their entry. The Mexican racing federation, OMDAI Sport Mexico, had initially placed the blame on Lawson, citing video evidence that suggested he had visibility of the marshals prior to the corner. However, the FIA emphasized that Lawson did not see them until the last moment, as confirmed by his frantic in-car radio communications immediately post-incident.

    Safety Concerns Raised

Lawson’s dramatic close call has prompted a broader investigation into safety protocols, particularly regarding the marshals’ presence on the live track. “It is fortunate this incident did not result in any serious consequences,” the FIA acknowledged in their statement. They are working closely with OMDAI and the Racing Bulls Formula One Team to identify potential improvements in safety measures.

    Future Implications

As discussions continue around enhancing track safety, the FIA expressed its gratitude to marshals for their dedication, emphasizing that without them, the sport could not operate safely. The findings from the ongoing investigation will be crucial for refining practices and ensuring the well-being of all participants.

The motorsport community awaits further developments as the FIA aims to clarify the events that led to this alarming incident, with the ultimate goal being the continuous improvement of safety in Formula One.
