Father who reversed over his son, 3, with telehandler jailed for 12 months

A Father who reversed over his son with a telehandler has been sentenced to 12 months in jail. The tragic incident occurred when the father was operating the heavy machinery on their farm and did not see his son playing behind him.

Albie Speakman suffered catastrophic injuries when he was struck by a telehandler driven by Neil Speakman on their family farm in Bury, Greater Manchester, on 16 July 2022.

Albie had been left by his dad playing in an unsecured garden at the front of the farmhouse on Bentley Hall Road in Walshaw, before entering the yard.

The court heard that the father was devastated by the accident and deeply remorseful for his actions. However, the judge emphasized the need for accountability and deterrence in such cases, leading to the jail sentence. Neil Speakman was sentenced on Friday for failing to ensure Albie’s health and safety.
