Fans call Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 $70 DLC and they’re not happy

Many fans aren’t thrilled to learn that Modern Warfare 3 will cost full price, despite reportedly starting life as DLC.

Activision will be unveiling Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 tomorrow, on Thursday, August 17, but fans already know quite a bit about it thanks to official information and leaks.

It’ll launch on November 10, there’ll be a beta session in October (one that will open early for PlayStation owners as usual), and it’ll cost as much as Modern Warfare 2 did.

While Modern Warfare 3 reportedly began as a DLC expansion for Modern Warfare 2, Activision has since described it as a ‘premium release,’ meaning they’re charging the usual $70/£70 for it, and some fans aren’t particularly thrilled to hear that.

‘As stated in numerous Activision Blizzard quarterly conference calls, Modern Warfare 3 is a premium release. It will be priced accordingly at $70,’ an Activision spokesperson told CharlieINTEL.

Activision, unsurprisingly, hasn’t commented on or admitted to it starting out as DLC, but since so much of the player base already perceives it as such, not many are happy about paying full price for what they see as a glorified expansion pack.

This is too far. Idc how much you wanna streamline your development process. Im not paying $70 for the same product just with different maps

Just because Activision calls it a premium release doesn’t mean that it’s not actually DLC for modern warfare II.

    $70 dlc. Unreal

‘$70? Well skipping for another year. This is literally a scam,’ says Reddit user Mountain-Adeptness94.

NotFakeJacob concurs, saying ‘I’ll be skipping this year, Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest video game disappointment of all time. Probably won’t give Activision my money ever again, unless we get a good Black Ops 2 or Advanced Warfare remaster.’

‘Haven’t bought a Call Of Duty game since Modern Warfare, don’t plan on buying one at full price that features recycled content from previous games. It’ll be the equivalent of a $30 expansion,’ adds MikeJ91.

As of now, every MWIII launch map is a remastered MW2 (2009) map. #MWIII

The latter is a reference to rumours from Twitter user el_bobberto (the same person responsible for leaking info from a private Modern Warfare 3 test) that none of Modern Warfare 3’s maps are brand new and are instead remasters of old maps. Not even ones from the original 2011 Modern Warfare 3 but the original 2009 Modern Warfare 2.

There is precedence for this since screenshots of two such maps – Terminal and Scrapyard – were leaked online just a couple of months ago.

‘So pretty much all the DLC 2009 Modern Warfare 2 maps that we were supposed to get this year are being advertised as new Modern Warfare 3 maps! Just wow,’ says Johnny_Menace.

KingMan753 is a bit more positive about things, since ‘Those maps are good,’ but also admits it’s ‘indicative of just how creatively bankrupt modern Call Of Duty is.’

No, I’m sticking to Dead by daylight. I will not buy your unfinished game. Modern Warfare 3 has only had a year of development and you’re going to charge $70 for it. That is a scam. Same with your $30 skin bundles.

    — Zombieimpact (@CameronOMalley5) August 15, 2023

What also doesn’t help is confirmation that you can transfer your Modern Warfare 2 operators and skins over to Modern Warfare 3, which only reinforces the idea that it used to be DLC.

‘Call Of Duty is a joke. I’ll stick with the classic [games] on Xbox,’ says BeatMasterFresh.

They’re probably not the only one. After a bunch of the older games had their online matchmaking fixed last month, they shot up to the top of the Xbox store’s best-sellers list, indicating that fans much prefer those games compared to more modern entries.

Modern Warfare 3’s reveal will take place via an in-game event held in the free-to-play Warzone, which begins at 6.30pm BST on Thursday, August 17.

Alright seriously If anyone buys Modern Warfare 3, they’re as moronic as people who buy Madden/NBA, literally a 70$ update.

Modern warfare 2 released last year, they had a planned DLC and it got turned into MW3, you’re getting a 70$ DLC.
