For the pop and the horror huns, the trailer for Opus has arrived – and fans of the genre are well and truly gassed.

A24 have released the trailer for its latest horror instalment, Opus, starring The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, who plays a young writer who goes on a trip that takes a sinister turn.

In a story that whistles in a similar tune to the likes of The Menu and Midsommar, Emmy winner Ayo’s character is invited to the remote home of a huge pop star – and guess what? Things get weird. Then some floorboards creek. Then they get terrifying.

The trailer has fans in an absolute spin, as many have compared it to other films of this particular genre that seems to be popping up everywhere.

‘OK, this looks nuts. I’m in,’ said @vectorvault on X, while @clippxxo wrote: ‘It’s giving midsommar.’

‘Incredibly seated,’ raved @benoftheweek, while @_iwitikirp said: ‘It looks like if midsommar and the menu having a child together.’

‘It kind of looks like a cross between The Menu and Midsommar and I am here for it!!’ agreed @alioop326 – but others weren’t so impressed.

‘This s**t is as tiresome as superhero movies at this point,’ commented @HillisEric, while @CinematicScott asked: ‘Isn’t this just Blink Twice?’

@TNOQuoProQuid summed it up: ‘Do we have a name yet for this genre of horror/thrillers where the concept is being flown out to a lush but isolated locale and then finding yourself at the whims of one extremely powerful, eccentric man (The Menu, Blink Twice, A Murder at the End of the World, Glass Onion).’

@theyshootactors noticed a theme too, and asked: ‘Why are 50% of movies suddenly, “Someone is invited to a luxurious retreat. . . but all is not as it seems”?’

Dangerous Liaisons actor John Malkovich stars alongside Ayo, as does Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder and Tony Hale.

Set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival – which kicks off on January 23 – Mark Anthony Green’s feature directorial debut will hit the big screen in the US in March, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.

Fans are hoping it will live up to the response of 2019’s Midsommar, which was dubbed as ‘life-changing’ but ‘horrific’ by many horror fans.

Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, and Will Poulter, the film follows Dani (Pugh) who travels to Sweden for the annual Midsummer festival, but soon finds herself lured into an ancestral commune.

The A24 film grossed a huge $48 million (£37.4 million) and holds a strong 83% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
