Fancy getting a filling? Dentists are among the hottest UK professions – and we’re confused

Do you ever catch yourself fantasising about having a latex glove in your mouth probing away at your teeth?

It may sound strange, but apparently one common thing that unites Brits these days is that dentists are among the hottest professions in the UK – and the rest of us are all baffled.

Lusting over someone wearing a uniform is as old as time itself, although you might expect to see the likes of firefighters or nurses on the list, it turns out that lab coats, face masks and a pocket full of scary looking oral instruments are leaving people in a tizzy.

Perhaps those of us who are a bit put off by the idea of sitting under the bright lights on a dentist chair are clearly missing out. Trips to the dentist can be a bit scary, even if actual oral health doctors have tried their best to make themselves seem less terrifying.

The mindblowing data, released by ThreadSpy, has revealed the nation’s most attractive professions. According to the survey, dentists were in the top 10 most attractive professions for both men and women.

From the data, which was sent out to 2,000 Brits, it was found that the eighth most attractive profession for a woman to have, according to 3% of women respondents and 2.5% of men.

Meanwhile, the most attractive profession for a man was a firefighter. However dentist finished at number nine on the list, according to 2.4% of female respondents and 1.6% of men. 

Although you might have joked about putting your cat in a tree so a ‘hot’ firefighter comes to your house to rescue – which you should not do, of course – we’re willing to bet no one has ever pondered breaking a tooth on purpose to lust over their dentist in person.

But as scary as dentists may seem, we must all be grateful we can access dental healthcare. A YouGov poll, conducted earlier this year, found 10% of people admitted to attempting ‘DIY dentistry’. More than half (56%) of the group carried it out in the last year and one in five said they did so because they could not find an NHS dentist.

The survey also found 22% of people were not registered with a dentist, with 23% of those saying it is because they cannot afford treatment.

So, why do some people think dentists are hot?

Sex expert Ness Cooper says that the explanation is actually fairly simple.

‘Medical professions for a long time have been set as standards for people to have or marry into, this includes dentists,’ she tells Metro.co.uk

‘Dentists also have to get very close to people, and for some, this may be the only physical touch they receive. While this isn’t automatically sexual, it may still influence a form of attachment and attraction for people in the future who are dentists.’

She adds: ‘There are also other senses heightened during dentist appointments which normally wouldn’t be stimulated elsewhere and some of these can lead to confusion in some people as to what this form of contact is associated with.’

The answer to the supposed sexiness of dentists could also just be a fetish, while the mouth itself could also shed some light.

‘There may be a medical fetish element in it for some. We shouldn’t fetishize health professionals, but some may have a preference for people with medical careers due to this,’ adds Ness.

‘For some with a medical fetish, it would be more about the process of dentist procedures or implements and uniforms.

‘The mouth is also an erogenous zone, which when stimulated can lead to arousal.’

We won’t be able to sit in a dentist’s chair the same way ever again.
