Daily Mirror – Exploding pager hell

    September 18, 2024

“Exploding pager hell,” writes the Daily Mirror, reporting on Israel being blamed for devices mysteriously blowing up in Lebanon and parts of Syria. The paper calls the attack ‘bizarre’ and notes as many as 2,750 people were wounded, 200 of them critically, Lebanon’s health minister said.

The front page also has an interview with the man who sparked “the downfall” of Huw Edwards. The 21-year-old says he is disgusted that Edwards did not receive a prison sentence despite having indecent images.

Exclusive: Israel suspected of ‘turning pagers into weapons to attack Hezbollah’ as 2,750 injured and nine killed

At least nine people were killed and nearly 3,000 injured today after hundreds of pagers exploded across Lebanon and in parts of Syria in an apparent attack.

Hezbollah members and a young girl were among those who died with Iran’s ambassador also injured, according to reports. As many as 2,750 people were wounded – 200 of them critically – and eight killed, Lebanon’s health minister Firas Abiad said.

The death toll later rose to nine. Hundreds of the devices exploded near simultaneously across Lebanon and parts of Syria, AP reported officials said. The exploded pagers were newly-acquired by Hezbollah after the group’s leader ordered members to stop using mobiles – warning they could be tracked by Israeli intelligence.

Exclusive: Huw Edwards’ young victim furious over punishment – ‘BBC star should be in prison’

The young person who sparked the beginning of Huw Edwards ’ downfall has demanded to know why the BBC newsreader was not jailed, fearing he could prey on young people like him again.

The 21-year-old, whose mum and stepdad blew the whistle on Edwards paying him £35,000 in return for X-rated images, blasted the judge for letting him go free.

“Edwards ruined my life and the victims in this case can’t be forgotten too,” he said. “It’s quite disgusting that people like this get to roam the streets while others are in jail for petty theft, and more minor crimes. He’s free to walk around and do whatever he wants. He could easily do it again, who knows?”

In the end, Edwards was given a six-month suspended prison sentence after he admitted making indecent images of children. “They said he couldn’t go to prison because of his mental health and I just thought, what a load of rubbish. He shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it,” he added.
