Cliff Notes – ‘Exceptional’ thriller with unexpected twists shoots up Netflix top 10

    • Rising Popularity: The 2023 thriller The Killing Kind has quickly climbed to the fourth spot on Netflix’s top 10, showcasing its growing audience appeal.

    • Engaging Plot: The series follows barrister Ingrid Lewis as she navigates the complexities of defending a former client accused of stalking, while dealing with her mentor’s suspicious death.

    • Mixed Reviews: While many viewers praise the show’s suspense and unexpected twists, some critics have noted issues with character likability and plot coherence.

There’s no limit to the juicy British thrillers you can dig your teeth into.

If you’re in the market for your next watch, then look now further as 2023 thriller, The Killing Kind, steadily climbs the ranks of the Netflix top 10, securing the number four spot.

The six-episode series centres on barrister Ingrid Lewis (Emma Appleton), who defends John Webster (Colin Morgan) against stalking charges.

As the Netflix description continues: ‘Haunted by her former client’s obsession, Ingrid reluctantly turns to him for help when her mentor dies under suspicious circumstances.’

The show had lots of praise when it first landed, with Google reviewer Rita Lazzerini writing the show is ‘full of suspense from the first minute to the last, keeping the spectator on continuous alert, not knowing what will happen next.’

‘I absolutely LOVE this show! There’s an unexpected twist in every episode,’ Heidi S praised on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘This show is still very watchable, and a good way to spend an hour. Colin Morgan and Emma Appleton will make it worth your time. And there are truly some good twists and turns along the way,’ Just S reflected.

Although there were some viewers who weren’t entirely convinced.

Three British thrillers to watch after The Killing Kind

Netflix has a treasure trove of British thrillers you can watch.

The Gathering: This Channel 4 series is about ‘a violent attack on a teenager at an illegal beach rave [which] sends shockwaves of suspicion through a Merseyside community. As secrets and lies are laid bare, will the truth emerge?’

The Replacement: The three-part show follows architect Ellen (Morven Christie) who falls pregnant. When her maternity cover, Paula (Vicky McClure) comes onto the scene – soon the life she has built for herself is threatened.

Black Work: This show follows police constable Jo Gillespie (Smith), whose life is upended when she leans her husband Ryan (Kenny Doughty), an undercover cop, has been killed under mysterious circumstances.

There has been some criticism of the series (Picture: Eleventh Hour Films)

One user, Tracey S, said the show became difficult to watch as the main character was ‘unlikeable’, an assessment some others agreed with.

Joe S criticised the plot of ‘meandering’ while Just S pointed out that despite the ‘excellent casting’, the plot felt it had some ‘loose ends’.

So, you’ll have to give the show a try yourself to see which side you land.

Morgan is a regular thriller star, most famously starring in The Fall opposite Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson.

In recent months, he has shown up in Irish series, The Boy That Never Was and BBC drama Dead and Buried opposite Annabel Scholey.

The Killing Kind is available to stream on Netflix now.
