Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter says Manchester United’s interest in Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres ‘makes sense’.
The Red Devils have been linked with the Swedish star following their appointment of Ruben Amorim from Sporting on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Gyokeres, 26, has established himself as one of Europe’s leading strikers during his two seasons in Lisbon since joining from Championship club Coventry, scoring 59 times in 65 matches.
The Swede, who played under Potter at Brighton, would cost in the region of £58m.
And Potter says the deal ‘makes sense’ given United’s struggles in front of goal.
‘You put two and two together and it makes sense,’ Potter told Premier League Productions.
‘Whether Sporting want to sell him or whether United have got the funds for that is another thing but he is a player that has surprised a lot in how well he has done.
‘He has gone to Coventry and had a fantastic period there and at Sporting he has been absolutely wonderful
‘He’s a no9 who can score. But the first thing for the manager will be assessing what do I have here, what are the strengths and weaknesses with the current group of players. Because I don’t think they will have too much money to spend in January.’
United are not expected to have significant funds available in January.
The club spent £200m last summer, though they recouped around £100m in player sales.
Amorim’s summer budget will be determined by whether the club can qualify for the Champions League.
