Central Park is one of the most iconic landmarks in New York City, known for green spaces, big events and cultural significance. It’s a beautiful oasis of green located in the heart of Manhattan with lots and lots to do, so we’ve put together a Central Park guide – so you don’t miss a thing!

Central Park is a green oasis located in the heart of Manhattan, spanning approximately 843 acres (341 hectares). It stretches from 59th Street to 110th Street and from Fifth Avenue to Central Park West.

The park features a naturalistic design with jogging trails, open lawns, wooded areas and various water bodies. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and completed in 1873.

    Central Park activities

Central Park activities are plentiful, especially those who love walking and taking in nature. There’s a zoo full of exotic animals, a beautiful landscaped garden divided into three sections (one of them is an English garden!) and a 2 and a half acre landscape paying tribute to the legendary British singer John Lennon.

There’s so much wildlife, plants and hubs of luscious green for you and the whole family to explore. Many of the Central Park activities are free, so take advantage of what the park has to offer. It’s a nice opportunity to step out from the chaos of city life and enjoy some rest and relaxation.

    • The Central Park Zoo: A small zoo located near the southeast corner of the park.
    • Bethesda Terrace and Fountain: A popular gathering spot with a grand staircase and intricate sculptures.
    • Conservatory Garden: A beautifully landscaped formal garden divided into three sections: French, Italian, and English.
    • The Mall and Literary Walk: A tree-lined pathway featuring statues of famous literary figures.
    • Belvedere Castle: A mock medieval castle that offers panoramic views of the park.
    • The Great Lawn: A large open space used for various events and recreational activities.
    • The Bow Bridge: A picturesque cast iron bridge spanning the lake.
    • Strawberry Fields: A designated “quiet zone” in honour of British singer John Lennon, located near his former NYC residence, The Dakota.
    • The Loeb Boathouse: Offers boat rentals for rowing on the lake and a restaurant with a lakeside view.

    Central Park Wildlife

Central Park hosts various events and performances throughout the year, including concerts and festivals.

Of course, away from all the activities is the park’s natural habitats including birds, squirrels and even racoons. The park’s landscapes, such as the Ramble, provide habitat for various species.

For those wanting to learn about the history of the park, there are guided tours available – you’ll also find out about the park’s hidden gems.

The park is of great cultural significance for New Yorkers and is a popular destination for those visiting. It’s worth remembering there’s so much to do in Central Park it’s a good idea to plan your trip according to what you want to do and the time you have.

Reviews of Central Park – Is it worth a visit?

It really depends on what time of year you’re going, your personal interests and how much time you’ve got. Some people would argue it’s just a park, and there’s not much more on offer than what you’d get from any other major park.

If you go during the summer and are looking for a relaxing day – or enjoy nature walks then the Park would be an excellent way to spend a day. But it really comes down to how much time you’ve got and what your interests are.

Is Central Park worth visiting in winter? Again, it depends on what you want to get out of your trip to NYC. There are plenty of things to do during the Christmas season with snowy activities like sledging, ice skating, and wildlife watching.

During the Christmas season, there are tree lighting and Christmas carriage rides. Here’s a visitors review of the New York Holiday Lights and Movie Sites Bus Tour:

Really fun; great info. We had plenty of time at the stops to get out and see all the windows. Great tour!

It was truly a great experience! We had a fun tour guide & nice guy. He made it fun & showed us lots of holiday lights, sights where movies were filmed, interesting information about actors/actresses & New York. We got to see so much that we would not have been able to see on our own. I got lots of nice pictures for memories. I definitely recommend!
