Hollywood star Henry Cavill has a new look for his latest film, Argylle (Picture: Instagram/@mrchrismcmillan)
As we gear up for the release of Henry Cavill’s new film, the man behind the actor’s rather singular new hairstyle has provided an up-close look at the star’s barnet.
We’ve already seen glimpses of the new blunt cut the Superman actor is rocking in the trailer for Argylle, in which he plays a fictional super-spy under Matthew Vaughn’s direction.
But with the film set to release next month, we’ve been afforded a clearer look – and we’re being reminded of several other famous figures’ distinctive haircuts.
From Simon Cowell and Jean-Claude Van Damme, to Sid from Toy Story, it seems the flat top (with short sides) is truly having a moment!
Hairstylist Chris McMillan – who also created one of the most famous looks in TV history with ‘The Rachel’ on Friends for actress Jennifer Aniston – took to Instagram to reveal Henry’s hair in all its glory.
He posted photos of Henry from the front and the back for the original hair test, which showed the 40-year-old’s brown hair styled standing up on its ends neatly, with a fade at the back.

Chris wrote alongside: ‘Thanks @claudiaschiffer and Matthew Vaughn @marv_films for collaborating and having me help create this iconic look for this EPIC movie – so fun.’
‘And thanks @henrycavill for trusting me to set this look,’ he added.
Without further ado, these are the vibes the hairstyle is giving…
Simon Cowell
TV mogul Simon Cowell has been wearing his hair this way for years (Picture: PA)
Britain’s Got Talent creator and judge Simon has been rocking a very similar hairstyle for year, with his dark locks recently softening to more of a grey-flecked look.
Although fellow judge Amanda Holden has recently given the inside track on why he’s looking a little different these days, after he drew praise from fans.
But honestly, it’s hard to not assume Simon and his consistent hair were a major inspiration.
Major Chip Hazard from Small Soldiers
This classic film character has similar hair (Picture: Dreamworks)
Henry’s hair certainly has a military edge to it with its neatness and squareness. Naturally, that leads our brains to Major Chip Hazard, voiced by Tommy Lee Jones, in classic 1998 film Small Soldiers.
A toy that’s certainly not to be trifled with, Chip is the villain of the piece, who wages war on his adversaries, the Gorgonites, as well as teenagers played by Kirsten Dunst and Gregory Smith.
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Of course, Jean-Claude Van Damme couldn’t not be mentioned… (Picture: Moviestore/Rex/Shutterstock)
We can’t not talk Jean-Claude Van Damme when examining this Argylle look, given its one the Belgian martial artist and actor has certainly channelled himself.
In 1994 film Street Fighter, based on the video game of the same name, JCVD’s got the flat top going on as Colonel William F. Guile as he battles to bring down drug lord General M. Bison (Raúl Juliá).
It’s also present on his head in Rolan Emmerich’s Universal Soldiers, two years prior, where Jean-Claude plays a former US Army soldier killed in the Vietnam War in 1969 who is returned to life thanks to a secret military project.
Sid from Toy Story
… Ditto for Toy Story’s Sid (Picture: Pixar/Disney)
An absolute icon of villains and animation, there’s no way the odd Sid meme wasn’t shared between cast and crew on the set of Argylle.
The Toy Story villain’s also got a famous lookalike in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Will Poulter.
However, despite what appears to be a shorter buzz cut variation for Sid, there’s something distinctly Argylle about the shape of his head and haircut, as well as a similar shade of brown.
Jim Carrey in Me, Myself and Irene
Comedy star Jim Carrey’s hair is incredibly close to Cavill’s in Argylle in Me, Myself and Irene (Picture: Glenn Watson/20th Century Fox/Kobal/Rex/Shutterstock)
Possibly the closest yet on this list is the flat top that actor Jim Carrey modelled for 2000’s Me, Myself and Irene opposite Renée Zellweger.
Henry’s for Argylle is just a fraction of an inch longer.
He plays nice-guy cop Charlie who develops Dissociative Identity Disorder and a second personality – Hank – after a psychotic breakdown.
Not only does the hairstyle make sense as Charlie is a Rhode Island state trooper, but his rude, violent and over-the-top persona Hank is also strongly reminiscent of characters played by Hollywood star Clint Eastwood.
Forrest Gump
A little shorter perhaps, but Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump also has a similar military-inspired hairstyle (Picture: Phillip Caruso/Paramount/Kobal/Rex/Shutterstock)
Another famous film character, the lovable protagonist of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) sticks with the short back and sides he was given during his time in the US Army.
Serving for eight years from 1966, including being sent to fight in Vietnam, Forest’s haircut is reminiscent of the time – and Argylle’s.
And given the vintage feel of Argylle, that makes sense as a reference point.
Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator
We didn’t remember Arnold Schwarzenegger’s hair in the original Terminator film being so similar (Picture: Orion/Kobal/Rex/Shutterstock)
Possibly the most famous film character of all on this list – and one that made its actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, a huge star.
The Terminator in 1984 was the first time he played the titular T-800 cyborg assassin, sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose unborn son will one day save humankind from extinction by AI network Skynet.
Schwarzenegger returned several times to the franchise, most recently in 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, but it was his first outing when he had the Argylle-like haircut.
Action Man
Moving onto the toys, and surely Action Man was an inspiration? (Picture: Jonathan Hordle/Rex/Shutterstock)
Well, if we had Chip Hazard – and Van Damme – it only made sense to give a nod to Action Man.
A military inspired action figure launched by Hasbro in 1993, Action Man also ended up with his own books, comics, video games and even animated films and TV shows.
They were initially repackaged GI Joe dolls, so the hairstyle was made to be brisk and businesslike.
Johnny Bravo
Johnny Bravo may be more left-field, but the squareness is present and correct (Picture: Cartoon Network)
Maybe not an identical look to Argylle, but this classic 1990s animated TV show star certainly had hair that stood up on end.
Johnny’s was supposed to be a big blonde quiff, based as he is on Elvis Presley and James Dean.
However, given the sharp, square edges thanks to the cartoon’s style, it’s certainly not a million miles away from that of Henry’s spy character.
Argylle boasts a star-studded cast and a mysterious plot (Picture: Universal Pictures)
The movie features a star studded cast comprised of Cavill, John Cena, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L Jackson, Bryan Cranston, Rob Delaney, singer Dua Lipa and Bryce Dallas Howard.
The story follows introverted author Elly (Howard) whose best-selling espionage novels about a secret agent named Argylle start to mirror the actions of a real-life spy organisation.
Argylle will be released in UK cinemas on Friday, February 2.
