The club statement on the sacking read:
“Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager.
“Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the club with immediate effect.
“An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.”
The announcement will not come as a surprise to Everton fans, with the Toffees enduring a dismal run of form in recent months. Everton’s defeat to Norwich on Saturday was the club’s ninth in their last 13 league games – a run that has seen the club drop way down to 16th in the table.
Currently, the club sit just six points above the relegation zone, with an abysmal goal difference of -10 after 19 Premier League games.
Everton replacement managers
David Moyes is a hopeful citation but one that Everton FC will try to pursue.
However, the early favourite to take the reins on a permanent basis at present is former Toffees striker, Wayne Rooney.
Rooney is working miracles in far from ideal circumstances at Derby County this season and WTX Sport have highlighted Rooney as an early frontrunner to take charge at his boyhood club.
Other Managers who have been are Duncan Ferguson, Frank Lampard, Brighton’s Graham Potter and Nuno Espirito Santo as possible successors.
