Von der Leyen convenes seminar to address competitiveness and ‘frustrations’

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will convene a meeting of European Commissioners on competitiveness on Wednesday in Leuven, Belgium, according to Euronews. This meeting is significant as it aims to address internal tensions within the Commission while also promoting the EU’s economic goals.

The seminar will include International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and is part of the EU’s strategy to enhance the European economy, based on the competitiveness report drafted by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

Additionally, it will serve as a preparatory session for an upcoming retreat of EU leaders scheduled for 12 February, which will also feature Draghi and former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta.

Officials indicated that the meeting will also focus on the Commission’s working methods, with one stating it offers an opportunity to express “frustrations” among commissioners. A notable concern is the ongoing issue of late submissions of legislative files to senior officials.
