Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City began their Premier League title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over promoted Burnley. The treble winning champions mean business, and usually Turf Moor would provide a tough test for City, But Burnley FC have changed direction under Kompany, and conceding the early goal was a killer.
A fitting start for Haaland as he gets the the first goal of the season
Haaland netted the first goal of the new Premier League season inside four minutes before doubling the champions’ lead with a superb finish.
Rodri added a third in the second half as Man City, who are chasing a fourth successive league title, enjoyed an ideal start to the season, though they lost Kevin de Bruyne to injury.
Despite the scoreline and a late red card to Anass Zaroury, there were some positives for a Burnley team who amassed more than 100 points to win the Championship last season, with Vincent Kompany’s side creating several chances.
But Burnley’s return to the Premier League was also marred by a supporter throwing an object at Man City defender Rico Lewis and another fan attempting to invade the pitch.
