The Guardian says watching Raheem Sterling play with such freedom against Ukraine was an absolute joy. In the middle of the euphoria, the only thing that gave me pause was the thought that, had Sterling not been astonishingly resilient when certain sections of the media loved him somewhat less, we might never have seen this day.
The onslaught that he suffered, which he spoke about publicly only when a fellow black footballer was targeted with similar unfairness, might have broken most players.
