Every football fan in England has one game that stands out above all others in their memory.

For millions, the Women’s World Cup final is that one, and the hopes of an entire nation rest on the Lionesses, who defeated Haiti, Nigeria, Denmark and Australia in their path to ultimate glory.

Millions of supporters will roar if the team beats Spain in Sydney and makes the country world champions for the very first time since 1966.

Queues of anxious fans have formed outside pubs and bars to secure a spot for the historic game, with the game tipped to give a £185 million boost to the UK economy.

Public screenings are taking place at locations such as east London’s Victoria Park – which could accommodate around 12,500 people – and the O2.

All three Boxpark fan zones are open for a live screening in what they have called ‘the ultimate festival of football’.

Tickets for Shoreditch, Croydon and Wembley sold out within eight minutes after the final whistle on Wednesday.

Dressed in old-fashioned red and white and their faces painted with the St George Cross, fans were spotted waving flags and chanting ‘Come on England’.

‘2:1, Russo and James, I reckon,’ one fan predicted the final score. ‘Millie Bright, Mary Earps at the back, this is superb defence.

‘They are going to put their bodies on the line, their hearts on their sleeves and they are going to bring it home.’

Another fan, who flew 10,000 miles to Australia with his daughter for the World Cup, said: ‘We are absolutely pumped.

‘We have been here for four to five weeks, following the team everywhere.’

The atmosphere has now certainly reached boiling point after the 11am kick off.
