England 2-1 Colombia: Lionesses dig deep in thrilling match
The Lionesses have met and conquered every hurdle that’s been thrown at them at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
On Saturday, they faced an unpredictable and physically tough Colombian team, where the Lionesses were able to carve out a 2-1 victory to book their spot in the semi-finals.
The last-8 game against Colombia may have been great preparation for England’s semi-final match against tournament co-hosts Australia.
Most of the 75,784 fans in the stadium were backing Colombia and most in the semis will be backing the home nation.
But England have shown how resilient they are. They went 1-0 down in the first half when a wonder strike from Leicy Santos caught out goalkeeper Mary Earps, but the Lionesses’ response was swift and decisive.
Lauren Hemp was able to equalise for England before the half-time break.
In the second half, Alessia Russo slotted another goal in the back of the Colombian net, giving England the lead.
The lionesses have faced a lot of obstacles this tournament but have dug deep and so far overcome them. From injuries to Lauren James’ red card, the team has forged ahead with a steely determination and an unwavering resolve to win.
They face Australia in the semis next, where they’ll face another hostile crowd. Australia are the only team to beat England since Sarina Wiegman took charge of the Lionesses, ending England’s 30-match unbeaten run, in a friendly on home soil.
If England do manage to beat Australia they will face either Spain or Sweden in the finals.
