As a vicar, Emmerdale’s Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) is all about forgiveness. It’s a huge part of his Christian faith. As a son, however, he’s been finding forgiveness hard to come by ever since his dad Victor (Eddie Osei) was released from prison and turned up to embed himself in the village.
Gradually we’ve learned about the troubled history between Charles and his dad. Victor’s life of crime led to Charles and his mum Claudette (Flo Wilson) never knowing when there’d be an ominous knock on the door from the police.
Knocks on the door from people who weren’t the police were even worse, as Charles described the time when criminal associates of his father’s held Claudette hostage while the young Charles frantically searched the local pubs for his father.
Charles’s greatest worry when Victor returned was that he would manage to win back the affections of Claudette. At first she was very scared of Victor but, as Charles feared, he’d soon won Claudette back over. While Charles is certain his father still can’t be trusted, Claudette has fallen for his charms all over again.
In coming episodes Charles seethes as he sees his parents now apparently reunited. Charles’s discomfort only seems to add to Victor’s delight in how things have turned out. This leads to a confrontation, and soon father and son are physically fighting. Claudette intervenes with a slap for her son, as she seeks to protect Victor who has a brain aneurysm.
Later, Charles and Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) have a row after she tries to talk to him about her feelings about the late Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel), to who she was once married. Manpreet has a necklace that Rishi gave her but Jai (Chris Bisson) has asked for it back as it’s a family heirloom. She’s angry that Charles hasn’t been more supportive about her keeping the necklace despite Jai’s wishes.

Victor overhears this row and uses it as ammunition to goad his son. A furious Charles vows that he’ll find a way to get Victor out of their lives for good.
The next day Charles and Manpreet make amends, and Jai arrives to collect the necklace – only for Manpreet to find that it’s gone missing. She immediately accuses Victor.
Claudette is convinced of her husband’s innocence and to prove it she searches his pockets. To her shock she finds the necklace. PC Swirling (Andy Moore) is summoned, but before he can get there Victor has vanished. He’s on parole and he knows that a brush with the law could see him straight back in prison.
Charles arrives home to find Manpreet fuming and Claudette worrying about where Victor could have vanished to. It seems that Charles has got his wish and Victor has gone – but at what cost to his family?

‘I would tell her to be careful because he’s been away for 25 years but he’s done this sort of thing before!’, Flo Wilson said.
‘He’s been in and out of prison for their entire marriage. I think as a friend you’d say ‘He may not have changed, so just be careful with your heart.’
‘She’s very proud because she’s got a son who’s a vicar and her grandson is a lawyer’, she added.
‘She’s feeling this happened because of her. If she didn’t steer Charles on the right path he’d never have become a vicar. She’s taking a lot of the glory which is not necessarily hers but I think that’s the kind of woman that she is.’
