Morecambe Football Club has been dealt a blow in their League Two campaign as they have slipped from 12th to 14th in the table after EFL deducts three points from Morecambe.
The deduction comes as a result of the club failing to adhere to an agreed decision imposed in August 2023, stemming from their failure to pay players on time.
EFL deducts three points from Morecambe
This setback has cost the league two side dearly, and has all but dashed Morecambe’s slim hopes of making it to the play-offs this season.
Morecambe FC Owner Jason Whittingham has also been hit with a £10,000 fine, with an additional suspended fine of £20,000 looming over him if he does not comply with his obligation to replenish the deposit account as per the terms of the agreed decision.
Based in Lancashire, Whittingham had been instructed to deposit an amount equal to 125% of the club’s monthly wage bill last year to cover any potential delays in payments. However, the EFL found that these funds had been used without being re-deposited, leading to the charges against the football club in December.
In response to the ruling, Morecambe released a statement expressing their disappointment with the outcome of the hearing.
The league two football club will now have to regroup and focus on finishing the season as strongly as possible despite the setback in the league standings.
