Sam is trying her best, but it isn’t going well (Picture: BBC)
Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) has finally returned to Albert Square, and while EastEnders viewers are thrilled, the same can’t be said for a number of characters.
Ricky Mitchell (Frankie Day) was left furious when Sam finally rocked up on the Slater’s doorstep, having been staying just around the corner for several days already.
Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) was even more unimpressed, and had soon given Sam what for.
However, they did eventually allow Sam to hold her new granddaughter, but were left cringing as Sam labelled herself a ‘hot, young grandma’.
In tonight’s (November 27) episode, it became clear just how out of practice Sam was at parenting, as she left poor Lily at her wit’s end over her conduct.

When Stacey Slater (Lacey Tuner) arrived home from a meeting with stalker Theo Hawthorne (William Ellis), Lily was quick to rant about Sam’s lack of knowledge, pointing out that Ricky had to tell on several occasions how to hold baby Charli correctly.
While Stacey defended her, saying that it had been a while since Sam had been around a baby and it may take some time to get that motherly intuition back, Lily argued that she’d never had it in the first place.
Viewers will know that Sam is notoriously selfish, and spent years doing her own thing while Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) raised son Ricky.

All of this, plus her recent actions may have put her at the top of the leader board for Albert Square’s worst mother and granny, which, given that Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) has since moved back to Walford, is a major feat.
Viewers will remember that Cindy was sent to prison in 1998 for trying to have Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) shot, before dying in childbirth not long later.

However, it recently transpired that Cindy hadn’t died at all, but had gone into witness protection after taking plea deal.
This meant that she had to leave her first four children behind in order to guarantee their safety.
Years later, after starting fresh and having two more children, Cindy learnt about the death of daughter Lucy Beale, and headed back to Albert Square, compromising the safety of her second family in the process.

This meant that Cindy couldn’t return to the life she had built, and had no choice but to abandon two more children.
Now, she has reconnected with son Peter (Thomas Law) and daughters Gina and Anna (Francesca Henry and Molly Rainford), but it has proven difficult to get them back onside.
