Dutch rail crash: 1 dead after passenger train derails
A passenger train derailed in the western Netherlands, resulting in at least one fatality and around 30 injuries, some of which are severe.
The train was carrying approximately 50 passengers and collided with a construction crane near Voorschoten, causing the accident. The collision also caused damage to a freight train.
While some individuals were treated at the scene, 19 were taken to the hospital.
The incident occurred at 03:25 local time on Tuesday, and images from the site depict overturned carriages and a smoke plume.
The Dutch Safety Board, an organisation responsible for conducting independent accident investigations, has dispatched officials to the scene.
Leiden Central Station, situated between The Hague and Amsterdam, has been closed as a result of the accident, with no trains to and from the city expected to run until at least 1600 local time.
Voorschoten Mayor Nadine Stemerdink expressed her condolences, calling it a tragic accident.
“This is an incredibly tragic accident,” she said.
“We regret there was also a fatality. My thoughts go out to all the family and friends of those involved.”
