Dry weather to provide some respite as Storm Fergus heads away from UK

If there’s one thing that’s marked December 2023 in the UK so far, it’s pretty miserable weather.

There were two named storms over the weekend – Elin on Saturday and Fergus on Sunday – which brought annoying rain to some places and terrible flooding to others.

But after the worst of Fergus passed by overnight, things are looking a little brighter for the rest of today.

A Met Office weather warning for rain in the north-west of England expired at 3am and the next one (for the east of Scotland) won’t come into effect until 9am tomorrow.

It should be noted that not everywhere will be getting a nice, crisp, clear December day today though.

The weather agency’s forecast says: ‘Brighter for many on Monday with sunny spells, and lighter winds.

‘However, some cloud and showers in the north and northwest. Wet and windy weather returning in the west later.’

Forecasters say today will be an ‘interlude’ between two bouts of heavy showers across the country.

There’s an area of low pressure that’s moving in from the west, and it’s looking like it’ll make its presence felt early tomorrow.

As a result, there will probably be ‘heavy rain at times’, as well as ‘some strong winds on exposed coasts’.

Once that’s done and dusted, though, the Met Office says signals are suggesting a more ‘settled’ week to come, particularly in the south of the country.
