Derek Hough has reflected on a tough end to 2023 after his wife, Hayley Erbert, was rushed to hospital.
The 27-year-old was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma, and later underwent surgery to replace part of her skull two weeks ago.
Taking to Instagram, the Dancing With The Stars judge shared a montage video of the last 12 months – including glimpses from their August wedding – as he discussed the ‘uncertain’ times they had faced.
‘2023. In the face of uncertainty, this year has been a canvas of reflection, painted with the colors of life’s challenges and joys,’ the 38-year-old began.
‘From creative passion projects to the unforgettable celebration of love at our Jack and Jill bash.
‘Embarking on a national tour, a whirlwind of planning, creating, and performing for thousands.

‘The pinnacle of this year’s journey was committing our love to one another in a breathtaking fairytale wedding, followed by an enchanting honeymoon in Italy,’ he continued.
‘These experiences are treasures of gratitude, reminding us of life’s splendor and its fleeting nature.
‘Each day of our extraordinary journey teaches us to cherish every fleeting moment.’
Fans flooded the comments section with praise for Derek and Hayley, offering them support after a tough few weeks.

A follower said: ‘Wow! Teary eyed for sure! That was quite a year and so thankful to witness from afar! Living each day to the fullest is a life lesson for all! Sending love and light to you both! Happy New Year’s Eve.’
‘Your life is so rich,’ another agreed. ‘And so full of love. You’ve both worked so hard to build this beautiful life full of love, dance, and happiness.
‘Wishing you both HEALTH and happiness in 2024. Praying for Hayley. Xoxo.’
‘Your STRENGTH and LOVE will get you through all the Years to come,’ one penned. ‘You have now experienced real beauty in Life as it’s so fragile…So proud of you xxoo.’
An Instagram user commented: ‘The most beautiful love is being able to dance through the storm and in the rain.
‘There is always a rainbow waiting somewhere in the distance. Prayers for comfort and healing in 2024.’
As a fan added: ‘Praying for your wife’s health and full recovery. You are such a wonderful soul Derek Hough.’
Hayley was taken in for treatment at the beginning of December after falling ill following a Symphony of Dance show in DC.
Derek revealed that she had been diagnosed with a cranial hematoma – the Mayo Clinic states that an intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the skull, and is usually caused by a blood vessel that bursts in the brain.
The hematoma, which could also be caused by trauma, can lead to a ‘pressing on the brain’ if the blood collects in the brain tissue or underneath the skull.
She underwent an operation on her skull shortly after, which her partner confirmed was successful.
‘With immense relief, gratitude and overwhelming joy I’d like to share that Hayley’s cranioplasty surgery has been successfully completed as planned,’ he said.
‘My sincere appreciation goes to the exceptional medical team. Their expertise and steady hands were pivotal in this journey, ensuring a smooth and successful surgery.
‘This surgery marks a significant milestone in my wife’s recovery journey, and your support has played a crucial role in getting us here.
‘We are filled with hope and optimism for the future, knowing she is on the path to a full recovery, surrounded by such a loving community.’
