Denise Welch recalls moment she left Tom Cruise crying with laughter at Michael Caine’s birthday

Denise Welch has revealed how she managed make Tom Cruise weep with laughter when she took the mic at Sir Michael Caine’s milestone birthday party.

Earlier this month, the British film icon turned 90 years old, marking the occasion with close pals including David Walliams, and his wife Shakira Baksh.

At one point in the evening, Denise, who attended with her husband Lincoln Townley, was asked to say a few words to the guests, and while she was initially reluctant, hearing Dame Joan Collins get some laughs spurred her on to do the same.

Speaking on Wednesday’s Loose Women, the 64-year-old explained that because she didn’t have too many stories of her own to tell about Sir Michael, she decided to ‘personalise a few jokes and pretend that they’re about Michael and Shakira’.

The TV presenter shared that Shakira piped up to point out ‘that never happened’, while Denise tried to stop her from ‘ruining’ the bit.

‘There’s a story that I’m telling here that I can’t repeat, but one of the stories was that as you get older you start talking about age a lot. Basically, Lincoln had said, “At 50, sometimes when I go for a wee, nothing happens.” And another friend in their 70s said, “Sometimes I want to go for a poo, and I sit there and nothing happens.,”’ she told the audience in the ITV studio.

‘And this old mate of ours who’s about 90 said, “Well what about me? Every morning at 6am I have a wee, and every morning at 6.30am, I have a poo.” And we said, “Well what’s wrong with that?” He said, “I don’t wake up till 7.”

‘I looked around and Tom Cruise was literally crying with laughter, [wiping his eyes] with his napkin going, “You’re killing it, you’re killing it.”’

Having shared a selfie with the Top Gun star at the party, she added: ‘So either I was particularly on form that night or Tom Cruise goes to the most boring dinners. But it was a huge honour to play a part in it, and he’s absolutely gorgeous Tom Cruise, lovely guy.’

On Instagram, Denise wrote about the bash: ‘Such an honour to be asked by Shakira to say a few words at Sir Michael Caines’ 90th birthday!!!

‘He loves a dirty joke and so does @tomcruise it appears!!!! Great night and amazing company.’
