Deadline looms for arrest of suspended South Korean President
South Korean investigators have less than 24 hours to arrest suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol before their warrant expires on Monday. The embattled leader remains holed up in his residence, protected by loyal security forces.
Yoon, a former star prosecutor, has refused to cooperate with investigators, declining questioning three times. A previous arrest attempt last month was thwarted when hundreds of his guards blocked authorities seeking to detain him over a failed martial law decree.
The standoff, which lasted for hours, has left uncertainty about whether investigators will make another attempt before the warrant expires at 1500 GMT on Monday. According to Yonhap news agency, authorities are reportedly weighing their options.
If arrested, Yoon faces the possibility of imprisonment or even the death penalty, having briefly suspended civilian rule and triggered South Korea’s worst political crisis in decades. Despite the looming threat, Yoon and his supporters remain resolute in their defiance.
