Deadlier mpox variant ‘likely already in the UK’
A deadlier variant of mpox that is tearing through Africa is ‘very likely’ already in the UK, an expert has warned.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a global health emergency over the new strain, known as clade 1b.
Fears that the disease could soon spread were confirmed this week when Sweden confirmed its first case of the new mpox strain.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said there are currently no cases of the virus here and the risk to the British population ‘is currently considered low’.
