David de Gea’s costly mistake raises questions about his future
David de Gea’s future at Manchester United is in doubt following a crucial mistake that gifted a goal to West Ham’s Said Benrahma, damaging Man Utd’s chance of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper has now made four errors that led to a goal in all competitions this season, the same as Hugo Lloris. Although De Gea had previously said that his contract talks at Old Trafford would “end in a good way” and he was “enjoying it,” this latest error could negatively affect negotiations.
Several football pundits, including Peter Crouch and Jermaine Jenas, have criticised De Gea for his mistakes, while former United defender Rio Ferdinand pointed out that De Gea’s footwork might not be suitable for the playing style of Erik ten Hag, United’s manager.
Despite this, De Gea has a proven track record of more than 500 appearances for the club, winning the player of the year award four times and various trophies. Nevertheless, De Gea’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and the decision regarding his future at the club lies with the manager.
