Danny Murphy hails Bruno Fernandes as Europe’s top attacking midfielder
Danny Murphy believes that Bruno Fernandes is the best attacking midfielder in Europe following his goal in Manchester United’s win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Fernandes scored United’s second goal in the 81st minute, securing a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford, which marked United’s fourth consecutive win under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
Murphy praised Fernandes’ performance, highlighting his return to form since Carrick took over. The 31-year-old has excelled in his attacking role, contributing one goal and four assists in his last four matches.
He has now accumulated 18 goal involvements this season, second only to Erling Haaland, who has 25.
Murphy’s assessment of Fernandes’ performance
“Bruno got his goal with a wonderful finish and topped off a brilliant performance, considering he actually had one of his poorer performances last week,” Murphy said during an appearance on Match of the Day. He emphasised that the current attacking output makes Fernandes arguably the best No 10 in Europe.
After the match, Fernandes acknowledged the positive influence of Carrick. He stated, “Michael came in with the right idea of giving the players the freedom to take responsibility on the pitch to do the decisions that were needed.” Fernandes, who joined United from Sporting CP for £47 million in 2020, expressed confidence in Carrick’s potential as a manager.
United’s promising form under Carrick
The victory places Manchester United firmly in the top four, just three points behind Aston Villa and Manchester City in the league standings. Murphy commented on Carrick’s impressive start, noting, “It will be hard to keep going with these numbers; these are phenomenal numbers.” Calls for Carrick to remain in charge beyond the season are expected to intensify if this form continues.
Speaking about the team’s current confidence, Fernandes said, “Everyone understands the pressure of playing for this club. Everyone knows the expectations around it.”
Following this win, Manchester United will look to extend their winning streak to five matches when they face West Ham United on Tuesday evening.
