Three things Gareth Southgate learned as England brush Ukraine aside at Wembley
STAR SPORT SAYS Goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka were enough to help England beat Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying on Sunday evening.
The Three Lions continued their perfect start to their qualifying campaign as they secured a comfortable 2-0 victory at Wembley. Gareth Southgate’s side were frustrated for much of the first half before Kane extended his lead as England’s all-time leading scorer by breaking the deadlock.
It proved to be a straightforward task for England once they took the lead, with Saka adding a second just minutes later. With that in mind, here are three things Southgate learned as his side beat Ukraine.
Maddison can play key role
James Maddison was rewarded for his fine club form with a first senior England start and provided constant energy across the attacking three behind Kane.
The Leicester City midfielder’s ability to float between both wings and the centre of the pitch proved threatening to the Ukraine defence throughout.
His range of passing created space in key areas as the Three Lions worked to break down the determined visitors before breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half.
There are options at left-back
Southgate once again benefited from his wealth of options at full-back in the absence of the suspended Luke Shaw, with Ben Chilwell coming into the defence at Wembley.
The 26-year-old was able to contribute in both attack and defence, despite having little to do in the defensive third.
With Chilwell not flying forward at every opportunity, Maddison was given the freedom to roam across the midfield, without having to drop back to cover the Chelsea defender, meaning England were not left short in attack after winning the ball back.
