Komeito cash handout demand highlights Abe’s fading power amid outbreak

Japan Times says the Komeito leader Natsu Yamaguchi marched into the prime minister’s office Wednesday morning with an ultimatum about the government’s emergency economic relief plan for the coronavirus.

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party’s junior coalition partner told the PM to abandon his Y300,000 per qualified household cash handout. And instead, go with Y100,000 per person without income restrictions.

Coronavirus: Plasma treatment to be trialled

BBC News says the UK is gearing up to use the blood of coronavirus survivors to treat hospital patients ill with the disease. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) wants people who recovered from Covid-19 to donate blood so they can potentially assess the therapy in trials.

The hope is that the antibodies they have built up will help to clear the virus in others. The US has already started a major project to study this, involving more than 1,500 hospitals.

UK Coronavirus live: Johnson against lifting lockdown over fears of a second wave

The Guardian says Boris Johnson is reported to be cautious about easing the lockdown for fear of sparking a second-wave of coronavirus infections.

According to the Times, the prime minister held a two-hour meeting on Friday with key government figures at which he said lifting the restrictions too soon could result in a “second peak” and lead to another lockdown.

Germany starts opening up as coronavirus outbreak is under-control

France24 says Germany is taking its first steps back to normality on Monday, as lockdown measures are eased. Smaller shops in some regions will open up for the first time in a month after politicians declared the coronavirus “under control.”

The majority of shops smaller than 800 square metres will be allowed to welcome customers again, in the first wave of relaxations to strict curbs on public life introduced last month.
