    Trump is getting his reopening as virus takes another swipe

    CNN says President Trump is getting what he wants: The country is opening up come what may, despite alarming indications that the coronavirus pandemic is intensifying its assault.

    Trump says the virus is now reduced to just the “embers” and “ashes” of a spent pandemic as patience for nationwide lock downs fades and states aggressively open up.

    The facts say the opposite. Another 1,299 Americans died on Tuesday and more than 112,000 people in the US have died from the disease.

    UK: Growing calls for the government to cut the 2-metre rule

    BBC News says the government is facing calls from Tory backbenchers to drop the 2m (6ft) social distancing rule in England.

    MPs, including former cabinet ministers Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Damian Green, say it is essential for the economy. The government has said it is constantly reviewing its coronavirus lockdown guidance.

    Crisis means local authorities could go bust 

    The Guardian says Mayors in some of England’s biggest cities are warning that local authorities are at risk of going bust with potentially devastating consequences for communities unless the government takes immediate action.

    As the impact of the Covid-19 crisis hits local authorities, the mayors of London, Greater Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool have issued a joint call to highlight the seriousness of the issue and urge Mr Johnson to respond.

    Experts warn of second-wave in Egypt

    Arab News says a WHO expert has confirmed the possibility of a second wave of the coronavirus in a number of countries. 

    Maha Talat cited Iran as an example, where infections have surged again. Speaking at a press conference on the latest developments on the pandemic, she added that Egypt was still in the middle of the first wave, which has not yet subsided. After this wave, she said, another wave might hit the country.

    Palestinians stranded by coronavirus seek a way home

    France24 says thousands of Palestinians stranded around the world by the coronavirus are still seeking a way home, months after countries closed their borders and grounded flights in the face of the pandemic.

    Aseel Bader touched down in Tuscany in January, after winning a scholarship for a master’s programme at the University of Florence.
