Daily Mirror – Woeful Tory Legacy: Bitter Pill
The Daily Mirror reports GPs could take industrial action this week for the first time in 60 years over NHS cuts. “Bitter pill” headlines the paper as British Medical Association ballot to take strike – the voting ends today. The paper says underfunding general practice could lead to a two-tier system where some patients go private.
Carrying a picture of Briton Adam Peaty holding his silver medal, the tabloid writes “What a Peaty” as Adam Peaty narrowly missed out on winning gold for Team GB.
The front page also continues its coverage of the ongoing Strictly Come Dancing scandal.
GPs could bring NHS to ‘standstill’ with historic industrial action within days
GPs could take industrial action this week for the first time in 60 years over NHS cuts that have left the service on its knees. There are fears underfunding will mirror the crisis dentistry is in, where patients go private just to get seen.
GPs fear more and more patients will end up in private practices, where consultations cost around £45, as they struggle to get appointments with NHS doctors – while those who cannot afford that will be left fighting for fewer spots available.
The situation has sparked fears of a repeat of the dentistry crisis where people in many parts of the country are unable to register with an NHS dentist due to closures, with private providers racing to fill the gaps. And GPs warn industrial action, which could begin on Thursday, would bring the NHS to a “standstill”.
Adam Peaty breaks down in tears after Olympic gold heartbreak in Paris Games final
Adam Peaty struggled to hold back tears after missing out on his third successive gold medal as he was pipped in the 100m men’s breaststroke final by just 0.02 seconds.
Peaty’s run started in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and continued at Tokyo 2020. The 29-year-old would have been just the second man after American Michael Phelps to win the same individual event at three Games in a row had he triumphed at the Paris Olympics on Sunday night.
Phelps was in the arena to see Peaty hold off challenges from his biggest rivals, but in a shock result, Nicolo Martinenghi charged in to take the win for Italy by the smallest of margins. Peaty finished in a tie for second with American Nic Fink – but it marks a remarkable comeback for the British superstar, who had taken time away from swimming after winning his second gold medal to focus on his mental health.
EXCLUSIVE: Giovanni Pernice’s future hangs in balance as Strictly bosses issue desperate plea
Giovanni Pernice is facing D-Day for his career this coming week as the results of the bullying probe are expected – which the BBC hopes will “draw a line” under the affair.
Insiders claim the report’s release would allow them to start announcing the names for the 20th anniversary line-up from next Monday (August 5). A source said: “It’s hoped that matters will be decided before then and everyone can move on, and we can start getting excited about the new names attached to the show instead of it being dogged by controversy.”
The BBC director general Tim Davie apologised earlier in the week to celebrities who have had an experience that “hasn’t been wholly positive”. And it’s widely expected that the results of the investigation are to be revealed this week “in order to draw a line under the affair once and for all.”
