Crowd gasps in horror as cricket fan plummets from London tube sign

A cricket fan plummeted more than 20ft from a London Underground sign while celebrating India’s T20 World Cup win, prompting gasps of horror from onlookers.

There were outbreaks of celebrations among the UK’s Indian community after the country won their first World Cup trophy since 2011.

One fan climbed a pole outside Queensbury tube station in northwest London in an attempt to tie an India flag but lost his grip before plummeting towards the ground.

Onlookers, who gathered to celebrate India’s World Cup triumph, gasped in horror and shock as the supporter fell, appearing to crash into a circular platform and then falling to the floor.

The man in question was later pictured with cuts and bruises, and appeared to be stable and able to stand.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 7:36pm on Saturday 29 June to reports of an incident on Queensbury Station Parade.

‘We sent multiple resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

‘We treated a man at the scene before taking him to a major trauma centre as a priority.’

India mounted a stunning fightback to beat South Africa in Saturday’s T20 World Cup final in Barbados.

South Africa were cruising to victory, needing 30 runs from 30 balls with six wickets remaining, but fell seven short as India became T20 champions for the second time.
