Met chief Cressida Dick defends police officers after Wembley Euros final chaos
The Times says the head of the Metropolitan Police has defended her officers over the chaos at the Euro 2020 final as the force said it had prevented the match being abandoned. Scotland Yard has blamed drunken hooligans for overpowering stadium security staff but faces lingering questions over crowd control outside the venue throughout Sunday.
Thousands of ticketless intruders forced their way through turnstiles and disabled access entrances, knocking down those with tickets. Fans said they saw stewards taking cash bribes at barriers, knives on the terraces and drug use throughout the stadium as the intruders packed stairways and occupied seats reserved for paying England supporters or empty due to Covid-19 rules.
