Covid testing capacity under strain as cases rise with more than 48 hours wait for home test results
The i says Britain’s capacity to process Covid-19 tests appears to be under strain amid rising infections, with intermittent shortages and longer turnaround times for tests.
Official data show that fewer PCR tests are being processed within 24 hours than they were just a few weeks ago, with people who take a test at home forced to wait more than two days on average.
Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt warned that the apparent shortages in capacity were “uncomfortably echoing” last autumn, when the second wave of coronavirus prompted a national shortage of tests. Labour called for an urgent explanation from Sajid Javid, who took over at the Department of Health last month.
