Covid-19: No local restrictions for 8 areas in England hit by the Indian variant – update after chaos
The government has updated advice for eight areas in England that have been hit hard by the variant first identified in India.
The government says it was not imposing local restrictions after earlier advice told people to avoid non-essential travel altogether throwing holiday plans into chaos.
The earlier advice had caused a storm because it had come without an announcement and local leaders said they had not been consulted.
However, the updated advice asks people to minimise travel into and out of Bolton, Blackburn, Kirklees, Bedford, Burnley, Leicester, Hounslow and North Tyneside.
