French elections: Could Marine Le Pen win the French elections?
The far-right politician obtained her highest result ever in the first round of presidential elections on Sunday, but President Macron has also gained ground and is still in the lead.
She will now go head-to-head with President Macron in a final vote on 24 April.
Macron and Le Pen battled for the top job in France five years ago but the President is now facing a much stronger challenge from a reinvigorated leader of the far-right – Marine Le Pen.
The polls are suggesting a very close race.
In the media, a popular angle for international media is the idea of a polarised France. President Macron is a centrist, whilst Le Pen is a far-right candidate. The rise of the far-right in France is another huge discussion point around the French election and how that relates to President Macron’s campaign – many articles say he will have to really work his socks off to win.
The reinvention of Le Pen and how she “softened her image” to make it to the runoff means centrist Macron may find it hard to make criticism of his far-right opponent’s racist, anti-Muslim platform stick in the next round.
Other publications say the popularity of Marine Le Pen’s vile politics is a warning the world must heed. The article says there are important lessons for politicians the world over.
