All flights to and from mainland China have been stopped by British Airways because of the coronavirus outbreak, the airline has said.
The airline’s announcement comes after the UK Foreign Office warned against travelling to China.
BA operates daily flights to Shanghai and Beijing from Heathrow. In a statement, they said that the suspension of flights to and from mainland China would take place “with immediate effect.”
They added: “We apologise to customers for the inconvenience, but the safety of our customers and crew is always our priority.”
Other airlines have already cancelled some flights to China.
Coronavirus update
So far the virus has caused more than 100 deaths and has spread across China and at least 16 other countries.
Foreign nationals are being evacuated from the central city of Wuhan – the place the virus was first identified.
The UK is arranging to bring back Brits currently in Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei province. It is believed roughly 300 Brits are waiting to be evacuated from the area.
600 Australian citizens returning to Australia are to be quarantined for two weeks on Christmas Island – 1,200 miles from the mainland.
Japan, the US and other EU countries are also evacuating their citizens.
