Peter gets worried (Picture: ITV)
Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne)’s life changed in an instant in Coronation Street when he made the split-second decision to drive his car straight at Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce).
Peter thought that Stephen was about to kill Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) as the multiple murderer was holding a bottle to her throat. Driving at Stephen and killing him, Peter thought he’d saved Jenny’s life.
Killing a man was hard for him to bear, and it became even worse when he discovered that Stephen had promised not to kill Jenny, so her life hadn’t actually been in danger.
Since then Peter has struggled. As a man who’s battled with alcoholism over the years his family and friends feared that the trauma of what happened with Stephen would send him back on the booze.

Instead Peter has attended a lot of AA meetings and has been doing his best to keep himself on an even keel, with the support of Carla (Alison King) and the rest of the family.

But when he sees his son, Simon (Alex Bain), propping up a bar Peter is concerned. The last thing he wants is for his son to go down the same path that he did.
Simon has had his fair share of problems in his own past and at one point was involved in dealing drugs, after being pulled into that world through his friendship with Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan) who was working for Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor).

On this occasion the reason that Simon is getting drunk is to cheer himself up after a setback. Dylan (Liam McCheyne) – under orders from bully Mason (Luca Toolan) – has stolen a load of vape pens that Simon was moving from a returns pallet to Peter’s car.
When Simon revealed the vapes had been stolen, Peter was furious and rushed round to Sean (Antony Cotton)’s to have it out with Dylan.

Peter’s anger wasn’t really with Simon, as he admitted later when he told Carla that he was really struggling with his conscience after killing Stephen.
So when he finds Simon apparently turning to drink in the wake of his outburst, Peter is quick to reassure him, telling him that he can’t let one setback defeat him – and drink is most certainly not the answer.
