Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has been going off the rails ever since his dad Peter (Chris Gascoyne) left Coronation Street to go and work on a round-the-world boat trip.
Feeling abandoned by his dad is clearly playing a part in Simon’s behaviour, but could Peter’s history of alcoholism also be affecting Simon as he increasingly turns to the bottle in a misguided attempt to deal with his problems? It’s certainly something that Peter worried about.
In upcoming episodes Simon has a massive hangover after going to meet his mates in town – while he was supposed to be at work. Instead he spent the whole day drinking, he tells Bobby (Jack Carroll).
As a result of the hangover he’s late for work, and when he finally does show up Beth (Lisa George) points out that anybody else would have been sacked by now for behaving the way he currently is.

Simon really tests Carla (Alison King)’s patience after Kirk (Andrew Whyment) sprains his ankle and Carla asks Simon to take over Kirk’s job of doing the deliveries in the van. When Simon outright refuses to do as she’s asked, Carla has no option but to fire him.

Waking up the next day with yet another hangover, Simon realises he’s spilled beer all over Nick (Ben Price)’s paperwork and quickly hides it before Nick can see what’s happened. He tells Nick he hasn’t seen his paperwork and offers to print it out for him again and bring it over to the bistro.

Nick’s grateful for Simon’s apparent assistance and tells Leanne (Jane Danson) that she should have a word with Carla and tell her that Simon deserves another chance. Leanne does so, telling Carla that Peter leaving has left a hole in Simon’s life and he needs the structure of having a job.
Simon later tells Leanne that Carla has taken Bobby on at the factory instead of him. Wanting to help him, Leanne offers him a job at the bistro. Nick isn’t entirely happy about this, but Leanne overrules him.

It looks like Nick might have been right to have misgivings when Simon starts work at the bistro and is immediately tempted by Bobby’s idea of having a lock-in after hours.
