Carla Connor (Alison King) is left facing the prospect that the factory she’s worked so hard to build up in Coronation Street is about to go under after Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) emptied the bank account shortly before his death.
Because Michael Bailey (Ryan Russell) gave Stephen the code for the bank account – obviously not realising at that point that Stephen had ulterior motives – the insurance won’t pay up as a result of the loss.
This has left Carla scrabbling to save her business and, in desperation, she went to Spain to try to secure more clients, even though Peter (Chris Gascoyne) really needed her support at home as he coped with the guilt of killing Stephen.
As Carla arrives back in Weatherfield it seems that the trip to Spain didn’t yield any positive results. There’s absolutely no money left in the business and she knows that she can’t pay her staff’s wages for the week.

The only fragment of hope is if they can get a new client order out by the next day, it could be enough to stabilise the situation as the client will pay cash on delivery. If they fail, that’s the end for Underworld.

But with a disgruntled staff team, Carla is forced into a huge lie.
She tells the workforce that the bank has traced all the money that Stephen stole and they’ll all be paid by the end of the day. She encourages them to get on with the order, knowing that it’s make-or-break.
